Library of Congress Bicentennial Celebration Presentation - Page 11

If the visitor arrives in time, he will see teams of judges moving along the ranks of carvings set out on the tables, or seated beside the two big water tanks, pushing decoys in the water. Here is the epicenter of the action. The tanks sit before a high podium, where an announcer overlooks the judging and reports on the progress. Fronting the tanks on the opposite side are rows of chairs holding the contestants and their families. Above each tank, a large sheet of silver Mylar, stretched taut on a light frame, mirrors every move of the judges' deliberations from above, so that no nuance, mark of favor (or slight), can be missed, or go unremarked. This well staged show business layout illustrates how far the P.F.D.A. has come since that awful day in that sweltering parking lot at the Richmond Rod & Gun.

Festival Painting Contest rewards artists who can paint the most handsome bird in two hours. Subject here is the
Cinnamon Teal. Crowd enjoyment is evident.
Head Whittling Contest.  Two hours to carve a prize winning head.  Sharp tools require heads up alertness,
head down concentration.
